If done correctly you can get a huge amount of targeted traffic from this method. It is recommended that you choose forums which have similar topics to that of your website. The actual content within your post has everything to do with the amount of traffic which comes from that post. What I mean is that you need to seriously answer the posted question and sound as knowledgeable about the topic as you can, without actively advertising your website. People will recognize you as an authority and check out your signature tag. Another positive outcome of answering post is that most public forums get spidered by Google and other search engines and your ‘good’ answer can be shown as a search result for similar queries.

Article Syndication is another method of creating non-reciprocating links which point back to your website. In the publishing world, webmasters are always seeking out quality content, filled with keywords that pertain to their website. This is where you as the author come in; if you write a great article, it could be picked up by numerous webmasters who will post it on their websites. This article will have an author bio box attached to it, where you will have you name and website URL along with a disclaimer stating that the article is free to use as long as the bio box stays in tact. This is common courtesy among webmasters and your link will be visible on a website within an article that presents you as an authority on a particular subject. This will result in good quality traffic coming from interested readers who now trust you because to just gave them a great read full of golden nuggets.

Now I am going to talk about reciprocal linking which is a great form of creating targeted traffic. Unlike submitting to link directories, reciprocal linking is a lot more work. This work of course has its rewards in targeted pre-sold traffic. When I say pre-sold I am referring to the state of mind of the individual clicking on your link from another site of like content. Think about how you find websites how often do you just Google and click on the first site you see and that website is exact thing you are looking for. Never, you find a site which leads you to another site which leads you to another and so on, until you find exactly what you are looking for. Also, throughout that process of searching websites you have been educated and gradually pushed to make a purchase. That is why I say the traffic is pre-sold, in other words you have high quality, ready to buy visitors which is exactly what you want.

With all of that in mind you must be picky about which websites you share a reciprocal link with. Ideally you will want to find websites with very similar content and a much higher Page Rank than you have.

You can find out a websites page rank by using the ‘Google Toolbar’. Once you find your target website you will need to craft a good email and ask for a reciprocal link. Now keep in mind that you will need to not only ask politely, but have something to offer, weather it be a free e-book, some scripts, a featured article. You have to make the offer so enticing that the webmaster won’t mind manually adding you to his/her link page. You will also need to include a direct link to your own link page where you entered that websites link. Be sure to have their link up and ready before sending the email as they will check for your reciprocal link. Also, be sure that your link page is one click away from your home page, meaning that the visitor should only have to click one button/link on your home page to get to your link page.

Anything you can do to make your link page better, do it, it will help you get that reciprocal link that you are after. I would suggest that you post articles or live RSS feeds to your link page to add content and make it more search engine friendly. You can also use scripts which allow other visitors to make comments about the links that you have listed, this will make your link page that much more desirable. The main thing to remember when asking for a reciprocal link is to put yourself in that webmasters shoes, and think what would I want in exchange for a link to a lower ranked website. He/she has the upper hand, so you need to make a convincing argument.

If you are trying to get to the top of the search engines with certain keywords, it is probably wise to target links that are relevant to your website. However, it seems that Google has more importance and power on incoming links than other search engines. Try not to worry too much about link popularity because it is a tiny portion of most search engines’ ranking algorithms. In reality, if you want to get the most links back just have the best site with the best content and most focused niche and you won’t have a problem getting links.

There are more and more websites using deceptive link strategies that not only don’t help your traffic but can hurt your reputation.

Link exchanges with disreputable sites can actually hurt your Google page rank and, in fact, lead to a penalty by Google.

Everyday I get several emails from webmasters asking me to exchange links with them. In their emails they are very complimentary about my site and “remind” me how important reciprocal linking is to a website’s success. They have already, in good faith, added my link to their site and provide a page URL that I can check to make sure its acceptable. In return, they ask that I provide a link to their site from my website.

Lately, nearly every link request I’ve gotten has been deceptive. For a link exchange to be fair, there not only needs to be a link to each other’s sites, but visitors need to be able to find those links preferably with a link to a “links” page from the home page. What I have discovered is that the link to my site is posted at the URL the webmaster sends me, but when I visit the home page, there is no link to the links page. There is no way for the other site’s visitors to find my link.

I feel certain that other sites are getting the same types of emails, but I wonder, do they check out the link? Do they verify it can be found from the other site’s home page? In a Google search, I found just a few articles related to dishonest link exchange schemes. Nevertheless, I was shocked (although I’m not sure why with the rampant dishonesty on the Internet) to find several other ways dishonest webmasters trick people into linking with them. Since web traffic and internet marketing is a must for online success, it’s important that all good webmasters know how to protect themselves from link scams.

Here are some tips to avoid a bad link partner:

1) When you receive a request to exchange links, check that the site is one you want to be associated with. If you are building a business online, you need to protect your reputation, so don’t accept any and all exchange request. What is the quality of content on the site? Does the site offer information relevant to your visitors? What is its Google page rank? (You can use the Google tool bar to find this out.) A “0 ” isn’t necessarily bad as it could be the site has not been indexed, but it could be under a penalty, so you should research the site carefully.

2) Verify your link is actually on the page. Deceitful webmasters may hide the link so it can’t be seen and therefore can’t be used by the site’s visitors. You can hit ctrl-a to highlight a page to find any hidden text. Other times, a dishonest webmaster may just not add the link at all.

3) If your link is there, click it. Verify it goes to your site as some deceitful webmasters have it link back to their homepage.

4) Check the code of the URL. Right click the link and choose “properties” from the drop down menu to see how the link is coded. If you see a java script, other coding other than htm or html, or if the link has “rel” in it, don’t do the exchange. These tactics are used so that the search engines will ignore the link and therefore it won’t help you with link popularity and page rank.

5) Also check the page code (Choose “View” from your browser task bar and then click on “source”) to make there is no direction to a robot.txt file telling the search engines to ignore the page by having “No Follow” or “Disallow”.

6) Go to the home page of the site and find out how visitors can access your link. Most of the bogus exchanges have pages and pages of links, but they aren’t actually connected to the main site, so people can’t find your link. If you can’t find the page your link is on from the home page, no one else with either.

Having many sites link to you is a good thing not just in generating traffic but in improving search engine page rank as well. Nevertheless, you need to be cautious of the company you keep. When you are asked to exchange links, watch out for the six tactics listed above to insure you are getting a fair exchange and not hurting your page rank or your online reputation, and remember… most link exchanges are great, but some link exchanges SUCK!

Google has a small green bar above each page. Many think that the longer the bar, the higher page rank the page has. This is not true. The green bar is almost totally meaningless little ” promotional ” bar only.

My list for quality links is:

- the target site must be relevant
- the target site must be able to drive traffic to your site
- the target site must have high page rank at Google ( and other SE )
- the links must be visible to search engine spiders. Most spiders crawl the site three level deep only
- the target site allows to use your own linktext ( including keywords )
- the target site must link to a specific content of your page

3. How many links you have now?

Go to linkpopularity.com and write your domain into the box. The result shows how many links right now point back to your domain. This number is what you have to increase.

4. Forum Postings.

Participate regularly to professional forums, which discuss relevant internet marketing issues. Note that the forums I recommend below are among the most visited sites worldwide! This means it is important to get links back to your site, these forums are 100 % related. I prefer these forums very professional: warriorforum, associateprograms forum and searchenginewatch forum.

At the bottom of each posting, there is a ” sig-file “, where you can type in your url with a short ad. This is your link back to your site.

5. Articles.

You can always write your articles by yourself or order them from writers like nichearticleclub.com or Elane. Search engines love articles with original, useful and fresh content. If you use written ones, you have to customize them.

If you try to acquire inbound links to your website by submitting your site to link farms or FFA pages, not only will it hurt your search engine ranking, but you might get banned from the search listings altogether. Links farms are sites where you can instantly exchange links with all the sites listed in that directory. FFA pages are pointless link directories. The search engines usually discount any links to your site originating from these FFA pages or link farms.

The way to improve your link popularity is simply by advertising your website. If your site provides a meaningful service or sells popular products, people will link to you after you start advertising and your site becomes more popular. You should also submit articles or press releases to article submission directories. You are allowed to include a link to your website at the bottom of the article. So, as your articles are put into circulation, you will receive a lot of links.

You might want to join a link exchange so that you can trade links with other sites, but the links you will receive are usually worthless. Instead, you should focus on advertising and submitting articles to get your site known so that you can get those high quality links you need to climb to the top of the search engines.

It can take several years to build a high number of quality, relevant links, but if you are persistent, your efforts will be rewarded in the long run. 2) Link farms and FFF sites may hurt more than help

Used to be (and to some extent you still see it) there were a number of services that offered to submit websites to thousands of search engines. To the novice webmaster, that may sound like a promising venture into search engine optimization, but at the end of the day the only search engines that make a difference are the ones used most by Internet users – Google, Yahoo, MSN, and other minor engines like AOL Search and Ask. The majority of these so called “engines” may turn out to be nothing more than pages using “parked” domain names (that is, a purchased URL not officially in use) to support coding full of search mechanisms drawn from other engines. Other sites may actually be link farms or FFA (free for all) sites, where anybody in the world can submit a site to attempt good link popularity.

A closer inspection of some sites reveals they can do more to harm a site’s relevance in Google than help. FFA sites in particular are a haven for pornography portals and sites of dubious interest, while link farms might require a reciprocal link in order to be included. If the link in question is not relevant to your site, it wouldn’t make sense to engage in such a relationship. Tempting as it may be, it is recommended to avoid such sites.

3) Webrings may not always be the answer.

Many authors I know tend to sign up for webrings – which are strings of HTML code designed to link together sites of a given theme. Authors of romance, mystery, science fiction and other topics may join a webring, place the code on their website, and allow visitors to jump from site to site in the “ring” by clicking on this code.

While the concept of the webring offers good intentions – the increased opportunity of visitors, for one – there are also disadvantages. Webrings are usually maintained by a single person, who must approve of each new member. A lax “ringmaster” may tend to neglect the ring, particularly if sites involved become defunct. Ring links leading to dead sites may also discourage visitors from using webrings – this often poses a problem for webrings that include hundreds of members.

If you are considering adding your site to a webring, take care to explore the ring in question first. Check for dead sites and the quality of the sites involved. Some webrings, too, require bulky logo images with their code and placement on a particular page. If you are concerned about your page’s design, you may wish to look to other methods of link popularity.

So how does one build effective link relationships for popularity? It is as simple as 1-2-3:

1) Build a fresh site of relevant content – information about your books/products, with content relevant to the topics 2) Research of quality websites with linking potential
3) Establishing a good relationship with webmasters of relevant content.

As an author, your site need not be limited to information about the books you write. Expand the topics to include supplemental articles of interest to would-be readers. For fiction authors, offer free stories furthering the adventures of your characters.

When approaching site owners for link consideration, be polite and detailed. Offer incentives wherever possible. If you write sports biographies, why not approach a collector or memoribilia retailer, and offer gift certificates to the shop in a monthly drawing for readers? Take every advantage you can think of to market your work, and if there is a possibility another site owner can benefit, make sure you emphasize that.

For example if you have a blog on blogger.com and place your URL (Uniform Resource Locator which you can find in the address bar when you access your blog on your explorer) on a site such as digg.com the hyperlink on digg.com which you placed is called a backlink and is the deciding factor of which site ranks where on major search engines after content has been considered and sometimes even without the consideration of content if the backlinks are strong enough.

The driving force behind internet marketing is the backlink though placing a backlink can sometimes be somewhat tricky. When Google scours the web in an attempt to search out each and every URL the more times they come across your link the more likely you will come up within the SERPs (search engine results pages). Now it is good to have a lot of backlinks, but you should be conscious of which sites are giving you a vote (1 backlink = 1 vote from an external web presence to yours). This makes a big difference on how much each and every vote will count when Google decides how high to place you in their index. The two things which Google takes into account when deciding on the importance of a backlink or vote is the authority/trust and relevancy which the backlink holds. Now digg.com is an excellent place to grab a backlink and Google does have trust for digg, but the backlink does not have relevancy unless your marketing another social bookmarking site so the backlink is missing half of the supreme backlink equation.

These are extremely difficult backlinks to acquire and any good Web Business Marketing expert should always be on the lookout for possible high quality highly relevant backlinks. When I say relevant I do not mean the category of your website, but the niche of your website which is a bit broader. For example if your website is about fishing poles that is the category, but the niche is the “fishing” niche and you can gain relevant backlinks for websites in such categories as fishing theory, fishing tips, fishing line, types of fish, really any and every website about fishing you should be seeking a cross promotional relationships with these sites.

There are plenty of ways besides gaining relevant high priority links which you will see advertised and the majority of these will get you in trouble. Stay away from any easy links since the majority will be link farms (websites which creation was for the sole purpose of boosting link popularity) and stick with either websites like yours or websites which have a high Page Rank.
